Overview

Scituate’s Irish Americans have maintained close ties with the history of their ancestral home. They commissioned a dramatic waterfront monument to the Easter Rising of 1916, the armed revolt against British rule that helped lead to Irish independence.

The Easter Rising of 1916

The Easter Rising of 1916 was an armed insurrection in Ireland against British rule that took place during Easter Week, from April 24 to April 29, 1916. Led by the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army occupied various locations in Dublin, proclaiming the establishment of the Irish Republic. Despite being militarily defeated, the actions of the rebels led to a moral victory, contributing to the eventful creation of an independent Irish state and influencing the decline of the British Empire.
