Overview
It was in December, 1778 that Captain Magee took command of the newly-built, one-hundred foot privateer bug, General Arnold. On Christmas Day, at sunrise, it sailed out of Boston Harbor, and as General Arnold sailed south, the nor’easter, which had been building, intensified. Captain Magee attempted to seek refuge in Plymouth Harbor. Although the sails were furled, and the anchors secured, the ferocious storm ripped the brig loose from the anchors and into the shoal just off Plymouth Beach. Seventy members of the crew were frozen to death, and another thirteen died over the next few days.
