HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL
Mrs. Abigail Adams, widow of Samuel Adams, commissioned the monument on the town Green to honor those brave individuals who fought for national unity. Some Irish-born men who fought in the Civil War include Bartholomew O’Brien and his four sons. Two of the O’Brien sons died in the conflict, a third was wounded and is buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery. This monument is the only one in the South Shore to list a woman, army nurse Martha Sever, who lost her life in the war.
