Overview

William Henry O’Connell, son of Irish immigrants and Boston’s first Archbishop to become a Cardinal, purchased some property in 1910 in Duxbury to serve as his summer residence renaming that portion of what today is Bay Farm “Miramar’ or ‘View of the Sea”. In 1922, Cardinal O’Connell sold this property to the Society of the Divine Word that would then use his residence as a four-year school for boys who, upon graduation, would enter the two year seminary on the property. A group of brothers and priests lived on the campus to work as teachers. The property also served for many years as a summer camp for boys. Cardinal O’Connell sometimes said Mass there. In the 50s the school and seminary for boys closed and the buildings were transformed into a junior college. Miramar today is a retreat Center.
